Cool Homes
The KCP&L Cool Homes Program is a residential central air-conditioning rebate program that helps KCP&L customers maintain the operating efficiency of central A/C systems and offset the cost of upgrading to new high-efficiency systems. KCP&L customers can save energy and reduce cooling costs while staying comfortable all summer long.
How the Cool Homes Program Works
- KCP&L customers may have their existing central air cooling system tested by a CheckMe!-trained HVAC contractor to see if it can be brought back to manufacturers' specifications or replaced with a high-efficiency air-conditioner or heat pump.
- Rebates are applied, per system, toward the purchase of a high-efficiency A/C or heat pump through a Cool Homes-trained HVAC service contractor authorized to offer Cool Homes rebates. (For example, a large house with three air conditioners may qualify for a rebate on each of the three air conditioners.)
- KCP&L customers may qualify for basic maintenance services to help tune-up qualifying equipment, even if they do not purchase a new system. If the cooling system can be brought back to manufacturers' specifications, limited services such as recharging the cooling refrigerant, providing non-ductwork airflow adjustments and basic filter cleaning or replacement may be provided. (Customers may receive a quote for additional costs required to service the equipment. Contact a CheckMe!-trained HVAC contractor for details.)
Rebates and Incentives
- Instant rebates of $650 and $850 may be available (at the time of purchase) for customers who replace their inefficient equipment with new equipment rated at 14/15 SEER or 16 SEER and above.
- No paperwork is required to claim this rebate incentive. KCP&L pays the HVAC contractor and customers receive the savings in the form of a credit on the invoice when purchasing a new high-efficiency system.
- Customers purchasing electric heat pumps may qualify for a lower electric rate through KCP&L.
- A $1,500 government tax credit may be available for purchasing high-efficiency cooling equipment. Learn more at www.energy.gov/taxbreaks.htm.
- All customers receiving a CheckMe! evaluation will get a FREE six-pack of compact fluorescent light bulbs.

Eligibility
- Cool Homes is available to any KCP&L customer receiving a residential electric rate, including single and multi-family homes.
- Cool Homes is not available to customers that have already purchased a new system.
- The instant rebate applies only to residential central A/C or heat pump systems at the time of purchase, and only when offered by a CheckMe! trained HVAC contractor.
- Window or portable air conditioners do not qualify for rebates or tune-ups.
- Only systems with a nameplate or operating EER of 8.0 or less are eligible for replacement. This can only be determined after the HVAC technician completes a test of the cooling system.
- Only central A/C or heat pump systems in working condition are eligible for the program.
- Cool Homes is not available to customers whose air conditioner or heat pump has died, malfunctioned, or is not working during the evaluation. Any inoperative or "dead" A/C and heat pump equipment cannot be tested, and therefore cannot be eligible for a rebate.
