Ben Richardson, Electrical Engineer

Prairie View A&M University

"The window of opportunity at KCP&L has been more like a door of unlimited possibilities for my future career as an engineer."

Tell me about your experience here at KCP&L. What has been your most memorable moment or event with the company?
I was a KCP&L intern through the INROADS program for three consecutive years. I spent my three years as an intern at the Hawthorn, Iatan, and La Cygne Stations.

Working at KCP&L as a full-time employee has been a huge learning opportunity for me. I am learning something new every day from business and engineering aspects. As major projects are presented, I have had to learn how to complete those projects using efficient methods.

My most memorable moments have been the INROADS golf tournaments in which I have had the opportunity to play with Chairman & CEO, Mike Chesser and Senior VP of Supply, Steve Easley.

What skills have you found to be most dominant with your career? And why?
Analytical skills have been most dominant in my career thus far, dealing with a variety of situations every day. In the process of achieving milestones within my projects, I must put forth the effort needed and become knowledgeable of the tasks that I encounter. Communication skills are a vital part of my every day routine. Being able to effectively communicate with people is very beneficial.

Have you had any special projects, served on a task force or received a promotion?
Throughout the year, I have had the opportunity to travel to different conferences and facilities pertaining to the mercury monitoring project I am currently working on. My objective is to install five mercury monitors at three plant sites so that they are able to continually measure the amount of mercury emitted from their power plant stacks.

KCP&L believes in the importance in volunteerism as a tool for community improvements. List some of your volunteer activities.
Getting involved in any KCP&L-related activities is never difficult. There are always a variety of opportunities that are available. I am currently a member of AABE (American Association of Blacks in Energy), the 100 Black Men of Greater Kansas City, and I am also an INROADS alum.

Why did you choose this specific field?
I chose this field because I have always had an interest in technology, computers, and how electronics operate. After years of experience as an intern and conversations with my advising counselors throughout school, I realized that I could obtain a career in engineering.

What advice would you give a college student that is considering employment with KCP&L?
While still in college, I would advise students to learn as much as they possibly can in their field of study. There is nothing better than being prepared as soon as you begin your career straight out of college. When searching for any career, make sure it’s something you will enjoy doing on a day-to-day basis. Once you find that career, find a mentor that will be available to help guide you when necessary.
