Working to Preserve Our Environment

butterfly photoDecades ago, Kansas City Power & Light became aware of the consequences generating power can have on our air, water and the many types of life that depend
on both. We helped pioneer efforts to reduce the environmental impact of electric generation. Today, our broad-based approach to environmental issues includes:

2006

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve
KCP&L partners with the Nature Conservancy to preserve and enrich the tallgrass prairie

Iatan 2 Wetlands - 106-acre site along the Missouri River bottoms known as "Welson Slough", being restored to its original wetland state to attract birds and wildlife, including endangered species.

2000

J.E. Wylie Memorial Bluebird Trail - walking trail in Sweet Springs, Missouri, dedicated to a longtime employee of the Missouri Department of Conservation

1999

Missouri Department of Conservation Discovery Center - KCP&L provided funding and technical assistance for the new Discovery Center in Kansas City, Missouri

K.C. WildLands - invited to become the only private corporation in a new project with Missouri Department of Conservation and Kansas City Parks and Recreation to identify pockets of native habitat in the metropolitan area and subsequently restore and manage the renmants of Kansas City's original landscape

1998

Blue River Glade Project - joint effort in Kansas City, Missouri, with The Nature Conservancy, K.C. Harmony, Missouri Department of Conservation and local government to connect the urban communities around Swope Park to the rare natural habitat right in their back yard

1997

Osprey release - KCP&L funded the release effort of the birds at the Montrose Generating Station and cared for the young osprey until they could be on their own

The Jerry Smith Farm Park - undeveloped park in Kansas City, Missouri Parks and Recreation Department. KCP&L has a transmission right-of-way through a portion of the park. A federally threatened plant, the eared false foxglove, is found in the right-of-way and thrives there because of our past management. KCP&L was asked by KC Parks and Recreation and Missouri Department of Conservation to use line clearance machinery to expand the habitat for the endangered plant. As a result, this park has the largest population of the endangered plant in Missouri

1996

KCP&L Prairie Wetland - partnership to develop a 26-acre constructed wetland for educational purposes. A three-cell wetland provides an educational site, wildlife habitat and a reduction of pollutants entering Hillsdale reservoir

1995

Green Lights - KCP&L voluntarily upgraded facility lighting using more efficient systems, saving 407,091 kilowatt hours of electricity annually, qualifying as an EPA Green Lights Company. This is the equivalent of removing 57 automobiles from the road or planting 18 acres of trees each year

Global Climate Challenge - a voluntary project with the U.S. DOE and about 55 utilities to reduce atmospheric CO2 through tree planting, forestry management and tropical rainforest preservation. KCP&L was one of the original members of this effort, which sponsors projects including reforestation, timber management and acquisition and preservation of tropical rainforests

Partnership with Bridging the Gap in programs like Choose Environmental Excellence and Keep Kansas City Beautiful

1994

Urban fishing clinics - outdoor ethics and education program that has been attended by more than 16,000 children, many from disadvantaged backgrounds

Earth Day programs - a variety of presentations to educate students on electrical generation and a variety of outdoor subjects

Operation Wildlife - rehabilitates and releases hundreds of animals each year and reaches thousands with its educational programs

1993

Solid Waste reduction - KC Pole and Lumber recycles old utility poles and sells the lumber. This prevents the lumber from filling landfills and provides valuable lumber for reuse in a variety of projects

1992

Heartland Skycast - partnership with Mid-America Regional Council to educate the public on air quality problems and the health risks from concentrations of ground-level ozone

1991

Peregrine Falcon restoration in downtown Kansas City - partnership with Missouri Department of Conservation, Commerce Bank and others to release 24 Peregrine falcons in downtown Kansas City. Every year since 1997 Peregrines have successfully raised their young in downtown Kansas City. This and similar programs resulted in the Peregrine's removal from the Federal Endangered Species list

1990

West Gardner Substation Prairie Partnership - development and preservation of 78-acre historic site for educational purposes

1988

Reduction in the purchase of hazardous chemicals - The Chemical Standards Committee was formed to evaluate chemical use and substitute non-hazardous substances where possible. The use of soap and water in parts washers has eliminated hazardous solvents in the everyday cleaning process

1985

Voluntary switching to low sulfur fuel at power plants in order to improve the quality of air emissions - as the tons of coal burned has increased, the SO2 emission rate has declined dramatically

1981

La Cygne Lake and Wildlife Management Area - partnered with KG&E, Linn County, Kansas City Power & Light, and the Kansas Fish and Game Commission to devote 4,900 acres as a Wildlife Management Area operated by the Fish and Game Commission

1958

Montrose Reservoir - established 4,100-acre recreation area operated by Missouri Conservation Commission. Area is visited by sightseers, campers, fisherman and hunters
