Flooding Update: July 28, 2011
This summer, KCP&L has been preparing and protecting its facilities from the impacts of prolonged flooding on and around the Missouri River. We’ve taken many steps to ensure we’re able to safely and reliably provide electricity to customers as flooding continues near power plants, railroad infrastructure, substations and power lines. During this time, we have had one goal: to keep air conditioners running and lights on for our customers, while keeping them and our crews safe in the process. We’ve committed significant resources and manpower to make this a reality. Some of our actions include:

  • Purchasing additional power and reducing the sale of surplus power to customers outside of KCP&L’s service area

  • Protecting our electric system from flood waters by sandbagging and building concrete walls around high-risk facilities, securing boating equipment to transport employees and materials and elevating critical IT infrastructure

  • Making plans to facilitate a quick return to normal operations once the flood is over

When flooding closed the access road, employees began commuting to the Iatan plant near Weston, Mo., by pontoon boat.

Reconnect Your Electric Service
Due to safety reasons, some KCP&L customers in flooded areas had their service disconnected. If you are one of them, please contact your local city government to learn if a permit or inspection is required before service can be reconnected. Then complete a KCP&L reconnect form. KCP&L can only restore service when the area being reconnected has been deemed safe and when the reconnection process does not pose a safety hazard to our employees
