KCP&L's electric retail rates are set by the Kansas Corporation Commission and the Missouri Public Service Commission.
Before KCP&L can increase rates, KCP&L must complete a process called a rate case. The rate case process gives the Commission and the public the opportunity to review the request and learn why KCP&L has requested a rate increase. Learn why rates are regulated by Commissions
If our costs indicate that we need to ask for a rate change, we do this by filing a request to the respective state utility Commission for review and approval. This process, referred to as a rate case, provides an opportunity for the state utility commission to audit the filing, and customers and other interested parties to submit comments and ask questions about the requested change.
Steps in the Rate Case Process
The typical process takes 8-11 months to complete.

- Other parties, known as interveners, may perform additional audits and reviews, voicing concerns or requesting more information to better understand the utility filing.

- The utility formally presents the case to the Commission through testimony. Commission Staff and interveners also file their case through testimony.
- The utility provides the most current numbers and final facts for consideration.
- The utility works with all parties to resolve as many issues as possible. The Commission hears any unresolved issues in a formal hearing. Commissioners then review any agreements, testimonies and documentation presented.
- The Commission issues a formal ruling and announces approved rates, which are then integrated into customer billing.
