Dual-fuel systems

Dual-fuel systems pair an air-source heat pump with a gas or propane furnace for back-up heating during extremely cold conditions. They connect to a furnace like a central air conditioner, lending themselves perfectly to new and existing homes. Working in tandem, the two switch back and forth automatically as the outside temperatures fluctuate, taking advantage of each system's operating strength and efficiencies.

Because they attach to a conventional furnace, dual-fuel or "add-on" models often replace an older air conditioner when the furnace is still in good operating condition. This can increase comfort and lower your energy costs. Other advantages include:

  • Fast heating recovery capability, allowing deeper day/night thermostat set-back
  • Flexibility to adjust to changes in energy prices to maximize lower cost heating
  • Easy retrofit of an existing air conditioning unit, typically with no wiring or electrical service upgrades required
