KCP&L Offers Customers Holiday Lighting Safety Tips

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Dec. 3, 2013) — The holidays are upon us and before you get out the ladder to string up a single strand of lights, KCP&L wants remind customers to be safe while they light up their homes for the holidays.

“Safety is our priority at KCP&L not only with our employees but also with our customers,” said Marvin Rollison, KCP&L vice president of Safety and Corporate Services. “During the holiday season we want to provide our customers with helpful tips on how to light up their homes in a safe and efficient manner.”

  • Check each set of lights, new and old, for split cords, worn ends or loose connections.
  • Replace burned-out bulbs with new bulbs immediately. Make sure to use the correct wattage.
  • When running an extension cord in your garage be sure to tape the cord down to prevent people from stumbling over it.
  • If you are hanging lights outside, make sure the lights you are using are certified for outdoor use. Never use indoor lights outside.
  • Check your extension cord to be sure it is rated for outdoor use.
  • Do not plug more than three sets of lights into each extension cord.
  • Stay away from power or feeder lines leading from utility poles into homes.
  • Be sure lights are secure so they do not move due to weather events such as wind or rain.
  • To hold lights in place use insulated hooks or staples, avoid nails or tacks.
  • Consider turning off holiday lights when you are asleep or away from your home as they could short out and start a fire.
  • When removing holiday lights take your time and use caution. Do not tug or yank at the strands as they could unravel and impede your safety.
