KCP&L REMINDS CUSTOMERS TO STAY SAFE DURING NATIONAL ELECTRICAL SAFETY MONTH
KCP&L announces the “Be Safe” Video Contest winners

Kansas City, Mo. (May 10, 2013) – May is National Electrical Safety Month and a good time for all KCP&L customers to brush up on their electrical safety knowledge. The following are a few electrical safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Keep electrical tools and appliances away from water. Never use electrical tools or appliances if your hands or feet are wet.
  • If you find a downed power line, even if no sparking is visible, stay at least 10 feet away. Call KCP&L toll-free at 1-888-LIGHT-KC (1-888-544-4852) (1-888-544-4852) to report it.
  • Always disconnect an electric appliance or tool by pulling the plug, rather than the cord.
  • Transformers for underground electric service are located in green boxes along property lines. If the boxes are opened or damaged, stay away from them and notify KCP&L immediately.
  • Before you dig or excavate for any planting or improvement project, protect yourself and avoid costly utility interruptions. Call 811 811 before your dig to get the location of all underground utilities. Visit kcpl.com for more information.

“At KCP&L we take safety very seriously,” said Marvin Rollison, KCP&L vice president of Safety and Corporate Services. “Electrical safety is important to both our employees and customers. We hope these tips will help everyone stay safe.”

KCP&L also found a fun way to remind customers about electrical safety during May through its Be Safe Video Contest. The winner of the contest is Nate Nold from St. Joseph, Mo. Nate’s prize-winning video features his dogs Brock and Izzy on safety patrol. You can view Nate’s video here

Nate will receive a $500 prize and a Royals VIP experience package including six tickets to an upcoming game. In addition to the first place prize, KCP&L also awarded an honorable mention, including a $100 gift card and 4 Royals tickets, to Larry Gorsuch and the Smarties family. You can view their award-winning video here

“The great thing about this contest is it’s a great way to educate everyone about electrical safety,” said Rollison. “Nate’s video will help us educate the community, especially youth, about the hazards of working and playing around electricity.”

This is the first year of the KCP&L Be Safe contest. Customers and employees created 30-second videos featuring safety messages ranging from not using electrical appliances near water to not overloading electrical outlets. The videos were uploaded to KCP&L’s Facebook page and voted on by the public.
