KCP&L Lineman Are Winners At Competition

Local linemen and apprentices competed and placed in 30th annual international rodeo

Bonner Springs, Kan. (Oct. 23, 2013) – On Saturday, Oct. 19, more than 215 linemen and apprentices from around the world competed in the 30th Annual International Lineman’s Rodeo. Linemen from Jamaica, Brazil, Canada and Great Britain gathered at the Agricultural Hall of Fame in Bonner Springs, Kan to compete in events like Pole Climb and Hurtman Rescue, as well as demonstrate safe work practices.

Following the day-long competition, several of local KCP&L participants received top awards at the event: 

  • Dan Malone (Kansas City metro), David Johnson (Lee Summit) and Brian Felix (Belton) received fourth place for the team Journeyman Hurt-person Rescue and the Cut Hot Jumper competitions.

“The 30th Annual International Lineman’s Rodeo is a highlight that crews from around the world look forward to,” said Duane Anstaett, KCP&L vice president of Delivery. “We’re very fortunate to have this event which showcases our commitment to safety and the work of our employees and others in our industry every year. We look forward to hosting for another 30 years and beyond.”

Now in its 30th year, the International Lineman’s Rodeo has been a venue for utility linemen from around the world to gather and compete in various events that test the skills linemen use every day. Since 1984, Thousands of linemen and apprentices from around the globe have participated in events that test linemen’s agility, speed, work quality and application of safety procedures. 

“One of the things that KCP&L enjoys most about hosting this is the opportunity to foster and build camaraderie among participants various companies. This camaraderie gives us the opportunity to discuss safety practices and ways to improve the safe performance of our linemen,” explained Anstaett.

Safety and demonstrating safe work practices is a critical component of The Lineman’s Rodeo. In addition to the competition, a two-day Safety & Training Conference was held to promote work safe practices across the industry.
