Utility Assistance Available

KCP&L 24-hour Media Hotline

Annual federal energy assistance for low-income families becomes available November 1 for Missouri residents and mid-January for Kansas residents.

Kansas City, Mo. (October 22, 2013) – As we enter the winter season, KCP&L wants to remind customers of assistance programs available to help with high energy bills.

Beginning Nov. 1, KCP&L customers in Missouri will be eligible to apply for LIHEAP assistance. Funding for KCP&L Kansas customers, LIEAP, will become available in mid-January. These are federally-funded programs that help eligible households pay energy bills during some of the coldest months of the year. For more information on the program guidelines or to access an application, please visit www.kcpl.com or call United Way 2-1-1 for a referral to your local community action agency.

“We understand some of our customers may be experiencing financial difficulties causing them to fall behind on their electric bills,” said Lori Shaffer, senior manager of KCP&L Customer and Community Affairs. “We want to reach out to those customers and work with them to find payment solutions and if possible, connect them to local agency funding programs.”

The Cold Weather Rule in Missouri and Kansas also goes into effect on Nov. 1. In addition to preventing disconnection on the coldest days, the rule also provides a 12-month payment plan for eligible residential customers. KCP&L offers additional programs and services to help customers as well. Customers who are interested in these payment options should visit “Energy Assist Programs.”

“It’s important to us that we partner with our customers during these trying times and help them avoid service disconnections,” said Shaffer. “Keeping them informed about available assistance funding is one of the ways we can help.”

Customers can also help someone who has fallen behind in their bills through an Energy Gift. An Energy Gift is a thoughtful and practical way to help a friend or family member in need of assistance. This gift lets you help someone with a payment made toward their KCP&L bill. You do not have to be a KCP&L customer yourself to purchase this gift; anyone can purchase an Energy Gift for one of our customers.
