Yesterday, reports emerged from local news outlets of a customer running extension cords to a neighbor’s house after the neighbor had their power disconnected. We wanted to share the following additional information about this situation:

  • After multiple complaint calls from individuals in the neighborhood, we investigated the situation and advised the neighbor that he was violating local and state regulations and codes by running extension cords between the houses. While we respect the neighbor trying to help someone in need, these actions pose a major safety and fire threat to this neighborhood.
  • We recommended a safer option to the neighbor to assist the disconnected customer through a KCP&L Energy Gift to his neighbor’s account.
  • KCP&L worked with the disconnected customer for many months and offered multiple payment arrangements, payment flexibility, social service help and enrollment in the KCP&L Medical Customer Program.
  • KCP&L cares about the safety of all customers and employees, and offers multiple programs to help customers who may need assistance with their utility bill.
