Nearly all KCP&L customers to have power restored by Wednesday evening

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Jan. 16, 2019 – Nearly all customers who lost power as a result of Saturday’s winter storm will have power by Wednesday evening. On Wednesday afternoon, about 1,800 customers were still waiting for power to be restored.

More than 2,000 utility workers were in the field Wednesday afternoon working to restore power to the remaining customers impacted by the storm. In addition to KCP&L crews and contractors, more than 14 utilities were assisting with restoration efforts. Crews will continue working around the clock until power has been restored to all customers.

Winter Storm Gia moved slowly through the Kansas City area Saturday, blanketing the city with up to 11 inches of wet, heavy snow. With more than 200,000 customers affected by the storm, KCP&L says it is the second worst storm in company history.

KCP&L continues to monitor the weather forecast for the remainder of the week and is preparing for the upcoming storm, including potentially keeping regional crews that are assisting with current power restoration in Kansas City until the storm Friday night has passed through Kansas and Missouri.

Wednesday, more than 2,000 linemen, tree trimmers, engineers and support staff worked in the field to restore power. KCP&L crews have been joined by crews from Westar Energy, Kansas; Midwest Energy, Kansas; Mid-American, Iowa; Ameren, Missouri and Illinois; City Utilities-Springfield, Missouri; Omaha Public Power District, Nebraska; AEP-SWEPCO, Louisiana; AEP-PSO, Oklahoma; Alliant Energy-IPL and Alliant Energy-WPL, Iowa and Wisconsin; Liberty Utilities-Empire District, Missouri; Capital Electric, Arkansas; and Madison Gas and Electric and WE Energy, Wisconsin to help restore power. Utilities have a practice of sharing crews when large storms hit areas to enable them to grow their work force and respond to the urgent need. Line contractors and tree trimming contractors are assisting as well.

Current outage locations and numbers are available on the KCP&L outage map (outagemap.kcpl.com). Outages may be reported online at KCPL.com and at 1-888-LIGHTKC (888-544-4852).
